Injectable cosmetic treatments, such as Botox, temporarily paralyze the muscles in the face, reducing or eliminating bad facial expressions and enhance your beauty. Botox is usually injected in the forehead and around the eyes for this purpose. Botox injections performed repeatedly over time can actually reduce the size of the jaw muscles, improving external appearance and reducing muscle-clenching symptoms.

In Korean medical journals, Botox is well-documented as a procedure for Jaw reduction. The muscles of this ethnic group are often reduced to give the face a more round appearance for cosmetic purposes. Since Botox performed over time achieves the same effect, traditional surgeries such as jaw reductions and mandibular angle reductions are now reserved only for patients with severe bony prominences as the main source of the treatment problem.

Jaw reduction

Injecting Botox into the jaw is a simple procedure. When the patient clenches their teeth together, the bulging of the jaw borders is easily seen. Inject directly at the bulging areas using 6 units per bulge, while staying away from the angle areas of the jaw and its lower border to avoid injecting into the parotid gland. The bulk of the jaw lies low anyway since it is thickest at the bottom. According to my experience, it takes about 25 – 35 units per side to achieve a good effect. In order to reach that number of units, I will inject at the front and back of the muscle under the jaw until I have injected all bulging areas.

The effects can often be seen within a few weeks, as judged by fewer headaches and muscle pain, but it takes about 6 months to see actual muscle shrinking. For the best results, Botox injections should be repeated 4 times a year after the first injection. An annual course of Botox treatment has dramatically reduced the size of the muscle. Even if no further Botox injections are given, the result of Jaw reduction continues to hold up.
